500 Lbs. Of Music was birthed when I booked a gig at Dave's Pub in Birmingham
back in the mid-2000s. They didn't use solo acts, so I had to find somebody to play
with me. I asked guitarist Mark Kimbrell if he wanted to do the gig and he said he
would. Then, the manager at Dave's asked me for the name of the duo...hmm, we
didn't have a name so I needed to come up with something. We were a Possum
spinoff, so I tried to think of something that reflected our Possum heritage but
couldn't come up with anything I liked. After a few more minutes and several more
rejected names, an idea hit me. Mark and I were both a bit large at the time (me
moreso than him), and I r ecalled an entertaining 80s duo called "Two Tons O' Fun"
made up of two large ladies. Mark and I probably weighed a bit over 500 pounds
together, so "500 Lbs. Of Music" was born. He and I played at Dave's every 5-6
weeks for a year or so, then he had an offer for a more regular gig. So I had to find
someone else to fill his spot. I honestly don't remember how it happened, but I
ended up with Mark's brother Matt on drums (one of Possum's drummers) and the
great Tim Boykin on electric guitar. We played at Dave's every few months for the
next few years and had a lot of fun and cool improvisational moments. In the spirit of
Possum, we never practiced a note...we just showed up and played. Matt was
always a hoot, and Tim either knew every song that was ever recorded, or he just
pulled 'em from the ether in realtime. Either way, we sure had a lot of fun!
