This song and its companion Still The Same offer a glimpse into both sides of a decaying relationship between two dear friends of mine. These songs are part chronicle and part prediction. "Still The Same" is my interpretation of a realtime look from the perspective of 'Friend A', and "Smilin" is a bit of speculation on what the future might hold for 'Friend B' if things continued along on their well-trodden path. "Smilin's Just A Thing I Used To Do" was written around 1984, and this version was recorded by Mosaic around 1989 at one of the first digital recording studios in Central Florida. The studio was in Gainesville, but I can't recall the location or the name of the facility. This is one of my older tunes I'd like to revisit at some point.
