For a time in the early '80s, Susie Hulcher and I were the first-call subs for The Convertibles. Our version featured songwriter Scott Boyer on guitar, Brian "BW" Wheeler on drums, the inimitable Topper Price on harmonica, me on guitar/pedal steel and Susie on bass. And if I remember correctly, we all sang lead and background background vocals at some point and just had a great time playing together. I cannot remember the identities of the two players we we subbed for, but we played a bunch of gigs with Scott, Topper and BW. We never recorded any of our live shows, but one studio cut survives. If memory serves me, we were helping Scott with some of his songwriter demos one afternoon at his studio in Point Clear, AL. We actually cut two or three of his tunes during the session. But the only recording that made it through to the 21st century is the one on this page, and I don't have a clue what the other tunes might've been. The lineup was Scott (rhythm guitar/lead vocals), Topper (harmonica/backing vocals), Joey (lead guitar/pedal steel/backing vocals), Susie (bass/backing vocals) & Brian “BW” Wheeler (drums). I'm not sure what Scott called this tongue-in-cheeky tune, but I've always called it... "The Blues Got Me Lookin' Thru The Glass Of A Fifth Of Early Times 'Cause Of You"
